Opening hours and the rhythm of the week
Museums in Bilbao do not share a single timetable. Understanding the general pattern will save you an unnecessary journey and help you choose the quiet hour.
How the week tends to be arranged
Most of the city's museums open through the morning and early afternoon and close for part of the middle of the day, then reopen in the late afternoon. Many are closed on one weekday, and Monday is the commonest choice. Larger institutions keep longer hours and stay open on Sundays, while smaller galleries in the old town often follow the habits of the streets around them.
Early and late windows
If you want space in which to look, the first hour after opening on a weekday is usually the calmest. There is often a second quiet window in the mid-afternoon, before the post-work and evening flow begins. Weekends are busiest in the late morning.
Days with no-charge entry
Several museums in the city set aside particular days, or particular hours, when a visitor may enter with no admission charge. These arrangements are a matter of each institution's own policy, they change from season to season, and they are sometimes limited to residents or to certain categories of visitor. The pattern differs from one museum to another: some offer a weekday afternoon, others an evening, others a date early in the month. Because the details move, the reliable course is to check the notice at the museum itself or on its own published information before you travel. Our pages describe the general practice, not a fixed calendar, and they never stand in for the museum's own word.
Reduced and concessionary admission
Alongside these no-charge windows, most museums apply concessionary admission for students, seniors, the unemployed and members of large families, and many admit young children at no charge under all circumstances. Proof of eligibility is normally requested, and European youth cards are widely recognised.
Closures and annual breaks
Expect at least one full closing day each year, and occasional shorter closures for installation or conservation. Major public holidays can also shift the pattern. When a gallery brings in a new exhibition, a room may close a few days beforehand.
